Stylistics: Text, Cognition and Corpora
Jane Lugea, Brian Walker
In this book, our aim is to help you identify and interpret features that contribute towards the style of texts. With a primary focus on style in literary genres (prose fiction, poetry, drama), the following chapters present a toolkit for the analysis of style that incorporates text, cognition and corpora:
- Text is the main object of study in Stylistics and refers to a piece of discourse which stands on its own, but nevertheless relates to other texts (e.g. through authorship, genre, parody, etc.).
- Cognition refers to how readers process texts and the interaction between textual information and readers’ minds.
- Corpora refers to incorporating methods, approaches and tools from Corpus Linguistics into stylistic enquiry to broaden, strengthen and motivate analyses.
As we will discover in 7 Chapter 1, corpora are large structured electronic compilations of texts.
